Scientists use it to study how much heat is given off or taken in. This can happen during a chemical reaction or a change in a physical state.

One type is called a bomb calorimeter.

It uses a strong steel container. This container can hold a lot of pressure. To use it, a small sample is put inside. Then, electricity is used to light the sample on fire. This is called combustion. As the sample burns, it gives off heat. This heat warms up the water around the steel bomb.

A thermometer then measures the change in temperature. By looking at this change, scientists can find the energy in the fuel.

Long ago, scientists made the first ice calorimeter.

Antoine Lavoisier and Pierre-Simon Laplace used it in the winter of 1782–83. They used the heat needed to melt ice to study chemical changes. This work helped start the study of heat and chemistry.
