Later, Hess chose to study chemistry. He met a great scientist in Sweden. This meeting helped him decide his path. Hess wanted to know about heat. He studied how heat moves during chemical changes.

He found a very important rule. We call this Hess' law. This law is about thermochemistry, which is the study of heat in chemistry. The law says that the total heat stays the same. It does not matter how many steps you take. It only matters where you start and where you end.

He also wrote a famous textbook. It helped many students learn chemistry. Hess studied many things, like minerals and sugars. One mineral was named hessite to honor him. Hess worked as a teacher for many years. He died in 1850 when he was 48 years old.
