He was a leader in organic chemistry. This is the study of carbon. He helped create the theory of chemical structure. This theory explains how atoms join together. He showed how carbon atoms can link to each other.

One of his biggest ideas was about benzene. Benzene is a special chemical. Kekulé said benzene is a ring. This ring has six carbon atoms. The atoms have bonds that switch places.

He said he had a dream about this ring. In his dream, he saw a snake biting its own tail. This helped him see the ring shape. He also had a vision of dancing atoms. This happened while he rode a horse carriage in London. His work helped the field of chemistry grow very fast. Many of his students later won Nobel Prizes. A large statue of him stands in Bonn, Germany.
