Justus von Liebig was a famous German scientist.

He helped start the field of organic chemistry. This is the study of things made of carbon.

As a boy, Liebig saw many crops fail. This was due to a volcanic winter. This hard time made him want to help plants grow. He studied how plants use nutrients like nitrogen. He found a rule called the law of the minimum. This rule says plants only grow as well as their scarcest nutrient allows. This discovery helped start the fertilizer industry.

Liebig was also a great teacher. He built a special lab at the University of Giessen.

He taught students how to do real science in a lab. He made a tool called a Kaliapparat. This tool used glass bulbs to measure carbon in a sample. He also made a tool called a Liebig condenser. This device helps turn vapor back into liquid. His ideas helped many people learn how to be chemists.
