To make ammonia, Haber used high heat and high pressure. He also used a catalyst. A catalyst is a substance that helps a chemical change happen faster. Later, Carl Bosch helped make this work on a huge scale. This is called the Haber-Bosch process. It uses an iron catalyst to make the work easier.

This invention changed the world. It helped make synthetic fertilizers. These fertilizers help crops grow much faster and healthier. Today, one third of the world's food uses ammonia made this way. This food supports nearly half of all people on Earth.

Haber's work also had a dark side. During World War I, he helped develop poisonous gases. This work led to him being called the father of chemical warfare. His ideas were later used in very sad ways during the Holocaust. Haber died in 1934 while traveling to a new job.
