Latent heat

Have you ever noticed how ice stays cold while it melts?

This happens because of latent heat. Latent means "hidden." This is energy used to change a substance from one state to another. It does not change the temperature during the change.

There are different kinds of latent heat. The latent heat of fusion happens when a solid melts into a liquid. The latent heat of vaporization happens when a liquid turns into a gas. There is also sublimation, which is when a solid turns straight into a gas.

A scientist named Joseph Black studied this in the 1700s.

He found that melting ice needs much more heat than we might think. The heat makes the ice change, but a thermometer does not show a rise in temperature. This is because the energy is busy changing the parts of the substance.

Nature uses this hidden energy every day. It happens when water evaporates from the ocean. It also happens when water vapor turns into clouds in the sky. This helps move energy around our planet.
