Some heat is hidden.

It helps things change. Ice turns into water. Water turns into steam. This heat stays hidden while this happens. It does not make things hotter yet.

This is called latent heat. A man named Joseph Black found it.

He saw that melting ice needs extra heat. This heat does not change the temperature. It only changes the state of the thing.

When water turns to steam, it takes in energy. The water molecules must move apart. This helps them turn into gas. It is a very big change.

When steam turns back to water, it lets heat out. This can make a surface warm. Steam can be much hotter than boiling water.

Nature uses this heat all the time. It happens in the clouds and the ocean. It is a very important part of our world.
