Gas can turn into a solid. This is called deposition. It does not turn into a liquid first.

This happens when a gas loses thermal energy. Thermal energy is heat. When the air gets very cold, things change.

Water vapour in the air can turn to ice. This makes frost on the ground. It also makes frost on leaves. This can happen even if the air is not quite cold enough. The leaf helps the vapour change.

Soot also does this. Soot is the black stuff from a fire. It rises as a hot gas. When the gas hits a chimney wall, it cools. The soot then turns into a solid on the wall.

Factories use a similar way to make thin layers. They heat a solid until it becomes a gas. They do this in a low-pressure chamber. The gas then turns back into a solid on a surface. This is called evaporative deposition. This way of changing lets out energy. We call this an exothermic change.
