Salt flats are big, open lands. They are covered in salt and minerals. Most salt flats look bright white. This is because they reflect the sun.

These lands form in dry deserts. First, water sits in a lake or pond. The water cannot sink into the ground. Then, the sun dries the water up. This is called evaporation. As the water goes away, it leaves minerals behind. These minerals build up over many years.

Salt flats can be tricky. A hard salt crust might hide soft mud. This mud can trap a large truck.
