We use degrees to measure parts of a circle. But how do we measure a sphere? A sphere is a round shape like a ball. We use a unit called a square degree.

Think about the sky. It looks like a giant dome around us. A square degree helps us measure how much space is in that dome. The whole sky has about 41,253 square degrees.

Looking up, the moon looks big. But it is actually very small. The moon covers about 0.2 square degrees of our sky. The sun looks the same size. It also covers about 0.2 square degrees.

Stars also form groups called constellations. Some groups are very large. Hydra is the largest constellation. It covers 431 square degrees. Other groups are tiny. Crux is the smallest group. It covers only 44 square degrees.

We can also use this to measure land. For example, the state of Connecticut is small. It covers about 1.3 square degrees. This helps us map the world and the stars.
