Long ago, people used carob seeds to weigh jewelry. They thought the seeds all had the same mass. Mass is how much matter is in an object. People thought the seeds were the same, but they were not. The seeds varied in weight just like other seeds.

In the past, every country had its own carat. Some carats were used to weigh gold. In 1907, leaders met in Paris. They agreed on a new way to measure. This is called the metric carat. One metric carat is 200 milligrams. A milligram is a very tiny unit of mass. One carat can be split into 100 points. Each point is 2 milligrams.

A very large diamond is called a paragon. A paragon must be at least 100 carats. That is about 20 grams. Jewelers use kits to find the exact weight.
