There are many parts to this system. The smallest part is the grain. A grain is a very tiny amount. Twenty-four grains make a pennyweight. We call this the dwt. Then, twenty pennyweights make one troy ounce. Finally, twelve troy ounces make a troy pound.

Where did this name come from? It might come from a town in France. That town is named Troyes. People traded there a long time ago. The system is very old. In the past, doctors used it for medicine. Now, it is mostly for metals. Some people use kilograms instead. But the troy ounce is still very common in trade.
