Ounce

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An ounce is a way to measure things. It can measure how heavy an object is. It can also measure the volume of a liquid. Volume is the amount of space a liquid takes up.

There are different kinds of ounces. The most common one is the avoirdupois ounce. This is used in the United States. Sixteen of these ounces make one pound. This ounce weighs about 28.35 grams.

A different kind is the troy ounce. People use this to weigh precious metals. These are expensive things like gold and silver. One troy ounce weighs about 31.1 grams. It is heavier than the common ounce.

In the past, many different ounces existed. Some were used by doctors. These were called apothecaries' ounces. Other countries had their own rules. For example, the Dutch once used an ounce that weighed 100 grams. Today, we use a few main types to keep things clear and fair.
