physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A ton is a way to measure mass. Mass is how much matter is in an object. There are many different kinds of tons. In the United States, people use the short ton. It weighs 2,000 pounds. In other places, people use the long ton. This weighs 2,240 pounds. There is also the metric ton. We call this a tonne. It weighs 1,000 kilograms.

Long ago, the word came from a large cask called a tun. These big barrels held wine on ships. One tun of wine weighed about 2,240 pounds. Because these barrels were a standard size, they helped measure ships.

Today, we use tons to measure many things. Ships use tons to show how much cargo they can carry. We also use the word in a fun way. If you have a ton of homework, it means you have a lot. It is a way to say something is a very large amount.
