Ton

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A ton is a way to measure mass, volume, or force. It is a very important unit of measure. Many different kinds of tons exist around the world. These different types help us measure many different things. We use them for heavy objects and large spaces.

People often use the word to mean a huge amount. You might say you have a ton of homework. This is just a way to say you have a lot.

There are three main types of mass tons. The short ton is used in the United States. It weighs exactly 2,000 pounds. The long ton is used in the United Kingdom. This weighs 2,240 pounds. The metric ton is also called a tonne. It weighs 1,000 kilograms or about 2,204 pounds.

These different numbers can be confusing. The difference between a short ton and a long ton is about 10 percent.

History shows us where the word came from. It comes from a word called a tun. A tun was a very large cask or barrel. These barrels were used to carry wine on sailing ships. One tun of wine weighed about 2,240 pounds. It also took up nearly 60 cubic feet of space.

Because these barrels were always the same size, they became a standard. Ship builders used them to measure how much a ship could hold.

Ships use special tons to measure their capacity. The deadweight ton measures how much a ship can carry. This includes things like fuel, water, and even the crew. Designers also look at the displacement of a ship. This is the weight of the water the ship moves out of the way.

They can calculate this by measuring the volume of the water. This makes it easier to find the weight.

We see the word ton used in many other ways today. In Britain, a ton can mean 100 of something. A person might drive at a speed of 100 miles per hour. Someone might also say they paid a ton for something. This could mean they paid 100 pounds.

Even in games, a ton can mean 100 points. The word helps us talk about large numbers easily.
