A hundredweight is a unit used to measure weight. People often use the short name "cwt" for it.

This unit helps us know how heavy things are. It is used in the United States and in Britain. However, the two places use different amounts. One is called the short hundredweight. The other is called the long hundredweight. This can make measuring a bit tricky. It is important to know which one you are using.

How the weight works depends on the system. The short hundredweight is used in the United States. It is equal to exactly 100 pounds. The long hundredweight is used in the British imperial system. This one is equal to 112 pounds. You might also hear it called 8 stone. Both systems use the unit to make a ton. There are 20 hundredweights in every ton. A short ton is 2,000 pounds. A long ton is 2,240 pounds.

History shows that these weights have changed over time. In England around the year 1300, people used different "hundreds." The word comes from the Latin word "centum."

In 1824, a law called the Weights and Measures Act was passed. It even banned certain measures to prevent fraud. Later, the Weights and Measures Act 1835 set the imperial hundredweight. In 1879, the United States measure became legal in the UK. It was given the name "cental" to help merchants. This helped people trade wheat and tobacco more easily.

Many different things have been weighed this way. In the United States, people use it for paper and grain. It is also used for oilseeds and concrete additives.

In the past, people used the long hundredweight for coal. They also used it for cattle and fertilizer. Now, many countries use the metric system instead. This means the hundredweight is used much less often. But some people still use it today. For example, church bell ringers still use this unit.

You might see this unit in very old tools. Old blacksmiths often used it for their anvils. They would stamp a three-digit number on the metal. This showed the hundredweight, the quarter-hundredweight, and the pounds. An anvil marked "1.1.8" weighs 1 hundredweight, 1 quarter, and 8 pounds.

Church bells use this same three-part system. You can also find it on old vehicles. Some old Ford Thames vans were measured in hundredweights. Even trucks in Canada used these numbers for their loads.
