Cubic metre

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A cubic metre is a way to measure volume. Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.

You can picture this as a cube. Every side of the cube is one metre long. Its symbol is m3. Some people also use the letters CBM.

This unit is part of the SI system. This is a standard set of units used by scientists. One cubic metre holds exactly 1,000 litres. It can also hold one tonne of pure water. This happens at a certain temperature. That temperature is 3.983 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, water is very dense. Dense means it is heavy for its size. If the water is 0 degrees Celsius, it weighs less. It would weigh 999.85 kilograms.

You can also use smaller units. A cubic decimetre is a smaller cube. It is the same as one litre. A cubic centimetre is even smaller. It is the same as one millilitre. These help us measure tiny spaces too.
