Volumetric flow rate

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Have you ever watched a river flow by? We can measure how much liquid moves in a certain time. This is called the volumetric flow rate. It tells us the volume of fluid that passes a spot. Scientists use many units to measure this. One unit is cubic metres per second. In the ocean, people use a unit called the sverdrup. This name comes from a man named Harald Sverdrup. It helps us study how ocean currents move.

There is another way to think about flow. We can look at the mass flow rate. This measures how heavy the moving liquid is. If the density stays the same, we can find one from the other. We also look at velocity, which is the speed of the flow. If the liquid moves through a flat area, we can use math to find the rate. We multiply the speed by the area. This works best if the speed is the same everywhere. In a river, we might call this discharge. It is a very useful way to study our world.
