How much liquid or gas is moving? We use tools called flowmeters to find out.

These tools measure the flow of fluids. A fluid is any liquid or gas.

Some meters work by counting. We call these positive-displacement flowmeters. They act like a bucket and a stopwatch. The tool fills a set space with fluid. Then it counts how many times it fills. One type uses oval gears. These gears spin as fluid pushes them.

Another type uses a nutating disk. This disk wobbles as water passes through. This is a common way to measure home water.

Other meters use moving parts like wheels. A turbine flowmeter has blades in the path of the flow. The fluid hits the blades and makes them spin. The speed of the spin shows the flow rate.

These are good for large users.

We can measure flow in many ways. We can measure the volume, which is the space it fills. We can also measure the mass, which is how heavy it is. Scientists use different units for these. For example, they might use liters per second.
