"text": "Flow measurement is the process of quantifying the movement of a bulk fluid. A fluid can be a liquid, such as water, or a gas, such as air. This measurement is vital across many industries. Engineers must monitor flow to manage water supplies, chemical processes, and energy distribution.

To do this, they use specialized devices called flowmeters. These devices allow us to determine how much fluid passes through a point in a specific amount of time.\n\nThere are two primary ways to describe flow: volumetric flow rate and mass flow rate. The volumetric flow rate, often symbolized as $Q$, measures the volume of fluid passing through a space. The mass flow rate, symbolized as $\dot{m}$, measures the actual mass of the fluid. These two values are related by the density ($\\rho$) of the material. For liquids, density stays almost the same regardless of conditions. However, gases are compressible. Their density changes significantly based on pressure and temperature.

Because of this, gas measurements often use \"standard\" or \"base\" flow rates to ensure accuracy across different environments.\n\nMany flowmeters rely on a primary flow element. This is a device placed directly into the fluid stream to create a measurable physical change. For example, an orifice plate creates a pressure drop as fluid passes through a constriction. The amount of pressure lost is related to the square of the volume flow rate. Another example is a vortex meter. This device produces a series of pressure oscillations, or vibrations, as the fluid moves past it. By measuring these changes, the meter can indirectly calculate the flow rate.\n\nPositive-displacement flowmeters work differently by accumulating a fixed volume of fluid. You can imagine this like using a bucket and a stopwatch. You start the timer when the bucket fills and stop it when it is full. To measure continuous flow, these meters use a system of moving parts to create repeating chambers. One type uses oval gears configured in a T shape. As fluid pushes these gears, they rotate and move fluid through alternating chambers.

Another version uses helical gears, which are shaped like a spiral. These create a progressive cavity that opens to admit fluid and then closes to release it.\n\nOther mechanical meters use different moving parts to track volume. Piston meters, also called rotary piston meters, are very common for domestic water measurement in the UK. These use a piston rotating within a chamber of a known volume. For home water supplies, the nutating disk meter is also widely used. In this system, the fluid strikes a disk that is mounted eccentrically. This causes the disk to \"wobble\" or nutate as the liquid passes through. This method is highly reliable, often measuring within 1 percent accuracy.\n\nTurbine flowmeters use the kinetic energy of the fluid to rotate a wheel. The fluid hits the turbine blades, which imparts force and sets the rotor in motion. Once the rotor reaches a steady speed, that speed is proportional to the fluid velocity.

These are excellent for large commercial users and fire protection systems. Because they do not block the entire path of the flow, they allow for high flow rates with less pressure loss. However, they work best with low-viscosity fluids. Large particles can damage the rotor, so strainers are often installed to protect the meter.\n\nScientists and engineers use many different units to express these values. For liquids, common units include liters per second or gallons per minute. In the field of oceanography, scientists measure the volume of water transported by currents using a unit called a sverdrup (Sv). One sverdrup is equal to $10^6$ cubic meters per second.

When transferring energy, such as natural gas, flow is often expressed as energy flow. This might be measured in gigajoules per hour or BTU per day. A flow computer is often used to derive this energy flow from the mass or volumetric flow rate.",
