How fast do things move? Scientists use a unit called the metre per second.

This unit measures speed. It can also measure velocity. Velocity is speed with a direction. We use the symbol m/s for this unit. It is part of the International System of Units. People call this the SI.

One metre per second means a body moves one metre in one second. It uses two base units. One is the metre for length. The other is the second for time. The metre is based on how far light travels. The second comes from the vibration of caesium atoms. These units are very precise.

Many people use this unit in science and engineering. Before 1960, people used other ways to measure speed. They used miles per hour or knots. Now, the metre per second is the official way. One metre per second is exactly 3.6 km/h. It is also about 2.2369 miles per hour.

Some people suggested a new name. They wanted to call it a benz. They named it after Karl Benz. But leaders rejected this name. The metre per second remains the main unit.
