Speed of light

physical science Maturity 7-9 Vital Level 3 Next article →

Light moves very fast. It travels through empty space at a set speed. This speed is a constant. That means it never changes. Scientists use the letter c to name this speed.

Light is the fastest thing in the universe. Nothing with mass can ever reach this speed. It would take too much power to get there.

Because light takes time to travel, we see the past. When we look at far stars, we see old light. This lets us study the history of space.

Long ago, Ole Rømer showed light is not instant. He studied a moon of Jupiter named Io. He saw light takes time to move. Later, James Clerk Maxwell said light is an electromagnetic wave. This means it is a wave of energy. Albert Einstein also studied light. He found that space and time are linked. He called this spacetime.

Light also slows down in things like glass or air. This change is called the refractive index. In a vacuum, light travels at its top speed.
