Speed of light

physical science Maturity 7-9 Vital Level 3 Next article →

The speed of light is one of the most important numbers in our universe. It is a constant, which means it never changes in empty space. Scientists call this speed "c." This speed is the ultimate limit for how fast anything can move. No matter how much energy you add to an object with mass, it can never reach this speed.

Light is also the fastest way that information or energy can travel through space. Because of this, the speed of light helps us understand how the whole universe works.

Light moves in a very specific way. In a vacuum, which is empty space, all light travels at the exact same speed. This includes visible light that we see with our eyes. It also includes other things like gravitational waves. However, light slows down when it travels through materials like glass or air.

Scientists measure this slowing down using something called the refractive index. For example, light in glass travels at about 75% of its top speed. In air, it is only slightly slower than its speed in a vacuum.

Humans have studied this speed for a long time. In 1676, Ole Rømer showed that light does not move instantly. He did this by watching a moon of Jupiter named Io.

Later, in 1865, James Clerk Maxwell said light is an electromagnetic wave. Then, Albert Einstein changed how we think about light. He showed that the speed of light is the same for everyone, no matter how they are moving.

Einstein used this idea to create his famous theory of relativity.

Today, we use very exact numbers to describe this speed. In a vacuum, light travels at exactly 299,792,458 metres per second. This number is so important that we use it to define how long a metre is. Since 1983, a metre has been defined as the distance light travels in a tiny fraction of a second.

This makes our measurements of distance very precise. We also use the speed of light to measure huge distances in space. By timing how long light takes to travel, we can map the stars.

Knowing the speed of light helps us see the history of space. Because light takes time to travel, looking at distant stars is like looking into the past. The starlight we see today left those stars a long time ago.

It also affects our technology here on Earth. When we send signals to space probes, it can take hours for the message to arrive. In computers, the speed of light sets the fastest possible speed for communication. Even though we cannot see it, this speed shapes our daily lives and our view of the cosmos.
