physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A short ton is a way to measure mass. Mass is how much stuff is in an object. People in the United States use this unit. They often just call it a "ton."

One short ton is 2,000 pounds. This is also called a short ton-force. This name is used for weight. Weight is the force of gravity on a mass.

The word "ton" can be tricky. It can mean a few different things. There are short, long, and metric tons. A metric ton is also called a tonne.

In the United States, some jobs use other tons. Naval ships might use the long ton. This is also called the imperial ton. People who study grain might use the metric ton.

Both the long and short ton use hundredweights. A hundredweight is a smaller unit of mass. There are 20 hundredweights in one ton. This rule works for both the long and short ton. It is important to know which ton to use.
