Long ago, the inch was not always the same. In England, one inch was equal to three barleycorns. A barleycorn is a single grain of barley. People would place three dry grains end to end. This made one inch. Some people also used a thumb to measure. A man's thumb is often about one inch wide.

Today, we have a set way to make an inch. It is based on the metric system. One inch is exactly 25.4 millimeters long. This is also exactly 2.54 centimeters.

We use inches to name the size of car wheels. In the United Kingdom, inches help show the size of road signs. You can use the symbol "in" to write inch. Some people also use two small marks called double primes.
