It is used in the United States and the United Kingdom. One foot is made of 12 inches. Three feet make one yard.

Long ago, the size of a foot changed often. It was different in every city or country.

People used their own bodies to set the size. Some used the length of a human foot. Others used the length of an arm. In ancient Rome, a standard foot was about 29.6 centimeters.

Today, we have a set size so everyone agrees. In 1959, leaders made an international agreement. They decided that one foot is exactly 0.3048 meters.

This helps people measure things the same way.

Some workers still use a special version called a survey foot. This was used for making maps in the United States and India. The survey foot is slightly different from the international foot. Most people now use the meter or the international foot instead.
