The idea of the mile is very old. It comes from the Roman mile. Romans made a mile from 1,000 paces. A pace is two steps. They placed stones along their roads. These were called milestones. They showed how far you were from Rome.

Different places had their own miles. The Dutch used miles based on walking time. In the 1600s, they had three different sizes. The Arabic mile was also used by scientists. Today, the United States and United Kingdom use miles. Most other countries use the kilometre instead. You might see the letters "mi" for miles. Some people use "mph" for miles per hour.

Sailors use a different kind called a nautical mile. This helps them travel on the sea.
