A furlong is a way to measure distance. It is one-eighth of a mile.

You can also think of it as 660 feet. It is about 201 metres long.

The name comes from old words for a long furrow. A furrow is a long line in a field. Long ago, a furlong was how far oxen could plough. This was the distance they could go without a rest. Turning heavy oxen was hard. So, farmers made the lines as long as possible.

Today, we use the furlong in new ways. It is very common in horse racing. Many races use it to measure how far horses run.

Some places use it for roads and cities too. In Chicago, many street blocks are about one furlong long. In Salt Lake City, downtown blocks are a square furlong. In Myanmar, highway signs use miles and furlongs to show distance. Even in Canada, some big roads follow a grid of furlongs. These roads stay about two kilometres apart.
