A nautical mile is a way to measure distance.

Pilots, sailors, and space travelers use it. It helps them find their way. It is also used to mark sea borders. One nautical mile is exactly 1,852 metres long. People use a speed called a knot. A knot is one nautical mile per hour.

Long ago, people used the Earth to find this length. They looked at the Earth's shape. They used a system of lines called latitude and longitude. One nautical mile was once the length of one minute of latitude. A minute is a tiny part of a degree.

Because the Earth is not a perfect ball, this length changes. It is slightly different at the poles than at the equator. Today, we use one fixed number for everyone. This makes travel much easier. Even on Mars, scientists could use a Martian nautical mile. This would help humans find their way on that planet.
