The name comes from two parts. One part means "field" and the other means "earth." This is because a li was once the length of a village.

The size of a li has changed a lot over time. Long ago, the value changed from one state to another. In the Qin dynasty, it was about 576 meters. Later, the Han dynasty set it at 415.8 meters. Today, one li is exactly 500 meters. This is half of a kilometer.

People use the li in many famous sayings. One name for the Great Wall is the "Ten-Thousand-Li Long Wall." This name means the wall is very long. Another saying says a journey of a thousand li starts with one step.

In old stories, some horses could travel a thousand li in one day. These were called "thousand-li horses." The li is also used in Japan and Korea. In Korea, a poetic name for the whole land is "Three Thousand Li."
