A chain is made of 100 small parts called links. In the year 1620, a man named Edmund Gunter made a special chain. It was 66 feet long with 100 links. This helped people survey land.

Many people used these chains to map new places. In the United States, laws once required these chains for surveys. People used them to plan towns and farm lands. Today, you can still see chains in some places. British railways use them to show where things are. A bridge might be at a certain mile and chain.

In sports, a cricket pitch is one chain long. In North America, farmers use measuring wheels. These wheels can measure parts of a chain. In India, people use metric chains. These use metres instead of feet. Even wildland firefighters use chains to measure how fast fires spread.
