Edmund Gunter was a mathematician from England. In 1620, he made a tool to measure land. It is a long metal chain. We call this tool Gunter's chain.

The chain has 100 small parts called links. These links help people measure distances very well. People use the chain for surveying. Surveying is the way people study and map out land.

To use the chain, a worker uses a colored pole. This pole marks the end point. The worker lays the chain out straight toward the pole. They put a pin in the ground at the end. Then they move the chain forward to that pin. They repeat this until they reach the pole.

Gunter's chain is 22 yards long. It helps people find the area of a field. For example, ten chains by ten chains makes 10 acres. An acre is a way to measure how big a piece of land is. This tool was used for a very long time. Some cricket pitches are even one chain long.
