A li is a traditional Chinese unit used to measure distance.

The name is made of two characters. One means "field" and the other means "earth." This is because a li was once thought to be the length of a single village. Today, a li is exactly 500 meters long. This makes it exactly half of a kilometer. It is a way to talk about how far something is.

Measuring distance has always been a changing task. For a long time, the li was not a fixed length. In the 1940s, a li could change based on how hard it was to walk the path. A li is also made of smaller parts called chi. There are 1,500 chi in one li. This system helps people break down long distances into smaller pieces. It is a bit like how we use feet and inches today. This makes it easier to track where you are going.

History shows that many leaders tried to set rules for the li. Some say the Yellow Emperor started these measurements around 2600 BC. Later, Yu the Great of the Xia dynasty helped standardize them. During the Qin dynasty, the li was about 576 meters. This changed during the Han dynasty to 415.8 meters. Historians found a bronze imperial standard measure in Beijing in 1924. This tool helps us know exactly how long old distances were.

Many famous stories and places use the li to show great scale. One name for the Great Wall is the "Ten-Thousand-Li Long Wall." This name is used to mean the wall is immeasurably long. In old stories, a mythical horse could travel 1,000 li in one day. These were called "thousand-li horses." There is even a famous saying about how a journey of a thousand li begins with one step. These phrases show how much people respect this unit of distance.

Other countries also use versions of the li. Japan and Korea both have units called ri or li. In Japan, the ri was once related to how far a person could walk in an hour. In Korea, the name "Three Thousand Li" is a poetic way to describe the whole peninsula. The national anthem of South Korea even mentions these 3,000 li. Even though we use kilometers now, the li stays alive in history and art.
