Most people today use the international mile to talk about distance. This mile is exactly 5,280 feet long. You can also say it is 1,760 yards. When people talk about distance in miles, they sometimes call it mileage. While many countries use kilometres, the United States and the United Kingdom still use the mile.

Some smaller countries also use it because they have ties to the US or UK.

Measuring a mile can be done in many different ways. The international mile is built from yards and feet. In 1959, leaders from the US and the Commonwealth of Nations made an agreement. They decided exactly how long a yard should be using the metric system. This made the international mile a very precise measurement.

Some people also use a special version called a US survey mile. The US Geological Survey used this for a long time. However, they officially stopped using it in 2022.

The idea of a mile started a very long time ago with the Romans.

The Roman mile was made of 1,000 paces. A pace was the distance of every other step. This meant the left foot hit the ground 1,000 times. Romans built 50,000 miles of stone roads across their empire. They placed stones at every mile to show the distance from Rome. These stones were called milestones. People could look at the carved numbers to see how far they were from the center.

Many different cultures created their own versions of a mile.

In the 1600s, the Dutch used three different sizes of miles. One of their miles was based on how long it took to walk for one hour. In the 2nd century, a thinker named Ptolemy used miles to measure the Earth. He used a mile to represent a small part of the Earth's curve. The Arabic mile was also used by scientists and geographers. In Croatia, a man named Stjepan Glavač made a new mile on a map in 1673. These different ways of measuring show how people always needed to track distance.

You can see the mile working in many parts of your life.

If you are in a car, you might see signs for miles per hour. This is often written as mph. If you are looking at how much gas a car uses, you might see mpg. Scientists use the letters "mi" to write the word mile. This helps people not confuse it with the metre or a millilitre. Even sailors use a special version called a nautical mile. This helps them navigate the big oceans more easily.
