Rod (unit)

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A rod is a special way to measure length. It is also called a perch or a pole.

People use this unit to map out pieces of land. One rod is exactly 16.5 feet long. In the metric system, this is about 5.0292 meters.

This measurement is very helpful for finding area. An acre is a large area of land. You can make one acre by using 160 square rods. This works if the field is 40 rods long and 4 rods wide.

Measuring land can be done in many ways. A surveyor might use a chain to measure a long path. A chain is a larger unit that is 4 rods long.

One chain is equal to 22 yards or 100 links. There are 10 chains in a furlong. A furlong is one-eighth of a mile. You can also find 80 chains in a full mile. These units all fit together like pieces of a puzzle. They help people know exactly how much land they own.

People have used rods for a very long time. The name perch comes from an ancient Roman unit called the pertica.

In the 1500s, a monk named Richard Benese wrote about using a rod. He suggested using a rod with knots on a cord. This helped people survey land more easily. Later, workers used rods made of iron. These iron rods could link together to make a chain. This made it easier to carry tools through thick bushes.

Different places had different rules for the rod. In Ireland, the perch was a different length than in England.

In the 13th century, people recorded many different lengths for a perch. Even in 1820, a report showed many different sizes. In the United States, the rod was often 16.5 survey feet. This was used for many years until early 2023. In some parts of Europe, they used names like canne or ruthe. Each place had its own way of measuring.

We do not use rods for everything today. Most people now use lasers or electronic tools to measure land. These new tools are much faster than old metal bars.

However, some people still use the rod for special jobs. Canoe maps use rods to measure portage paths. A portage is a path where people carry their canoes. Many canoes are about one rod long. In some places, people still use rods to measure small gardens. The rod is a small part of a very big history.
