A furlong is a special way to measure distance. It is exactly one-eighth of a mile.

You can also say it is 660 feet or 220 yards long. In the metric system, it is about 201 metres. This means five furlongs are almost exactly one kilometre. People still use this unit in many different ways today. It is most famous for measuring distances in horse racing.

In many countries, race lengths are given in miles and furlongs.

How does a furlong work with other measurements? It fits perfectly into a system of smaller units. One furlong is equal to 10 chains. It is also equal to 40 rods or perches. If you want to measure a large area, you can use it too. An acre is a shape that is one furlong long. An acre is also one chain wide. This makes the area 40 rods by 4 rods. These units all fit together like pieces of a puzzle.

The history of the furlong goes back a very long time. The name comes from Old English words for a long furrow. A furrow is a long line made by a plough in a field. Long ago, a furlong was how far oxen could plough without resting. Turning a heavy team of oxen was a hard job. Because of this, farmers made the furrows as long as possible. This helped them avoid turning the animals too often. In the late 13th century, England began to standardize these lengths.

Different places have used slightly different numbers for the furlong. In the United Kingdom and Canada, it is 201.168 metres. In the United States, some older definitions were a tiny bit different. This difference was only about two parts per million. That is a very small amount that does not change much for most people. The United States is now moving to the same international definition. This makes the measurement the same everywhere. This helps people avoid confusion when they measure things.

You can find the furlong hidden in the layout of many cities. In Chicago, many city blocks are about one furlong long. This happens because the city uses eight blocks for every mile. In Salt Lake City, the downtown blocks are shaped like a square furlong. You can see this pattern in Phoenix, Arizona, too. In Ontario, Canada, many major roads follow a grid of ten furlongs. These roads are usually about two kilometres apart. Even in Myanmar, highway signs show distance using miles and furlongs.
