An acre is a way to measure how much space a piece of land covers. It is a unit of area used in the United States and by many countries in the British Commonwealth.

You can think of an acre as any shape that holds a certain amount of space. It could be a long, thin rectangle or a perfect square. One acre is exactly 43,560 square feet. It is also 4,840 square yards. If you wanted to draw a square that was one acre, each side would be about 208 feet long.

This measurement helps farmers and builders talk about land in a way everyone understands.

To understand how an acre works, it helps to look at its parts. Traditionally, an acre is defined as a rectangle that is one chain wide and one furlong long. In feet, this means the land is 66 feet wide and 660 feet long. This shape is equal to exactly 10 square chains. You can also think of it as 160 perches or 4 roods. These are just different ways to break the same large area into smaller pieces.

Measuring land this way makes it easy to divide large fields into smaller sections.

People have been using the acre for a very long time. The word comes from an old Norman word meaning an agrarian measure. In the Middle Ages, an acre had a very practical meaning for farmers. It was the amount of land a single man could plough in one day. To do this hard job, he would use a team of eight oxen. The length of the field was often called a furlong because it was "a furrow long."

This shows how math often grows out of real work in the fields.

There are actually two different types of acres used in the United States today. One is called the international acre and the other is the US survey acre. They are almost exactly the same size. The difference between them is only about four parts per million. To visualize this, the difference is about the size of a small piece of paper.

In the United States, 640 acres make up one whole square mile. This helps people divide large areas of land into smaller, manageable parts.

It can be hard to imagine how big an acre really is without a picture. A good way to see it is to think about an American football field. One acre is about 90% of a football field if you do not count the end zones.

In other parts of the world, like a football pitch, an acre is a little more than half the size. Whether you are measuring a backyard or a huge farm, the acre helps us know exactly how much space we have to work with.
