Mile run

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The mile run is a famous middle-distance foot race. It covers a distance of 1,760 yards. This is the same as 5,280 feet. It is also exactly 1,609.344 metres. Even though it is close to the 1500 metres race, it feels different. Many runners find the mile to be a very hard job.

Some runners even say it is more challenging than longer races. It remains a very popular way to test how fast a person can run.

Running this distance often involves a specific way of racing. On many tracks, the race is exactly four laps. This is because many tracks are built to be one quarter of a mile long. A quarter mile is 440 yards or 402.336 metres. In some modern races, runners use pacemakers to help them. A pacemaker is a runner who sets a steady speed for others. This helps the main runners keep a good pace during the race.

This sport has a long history that began in England. In the 1700s and 1800s, people ran miles to win money. These contests were called wagered races. They attracted huge crowds of spectators and gamblers. By 1790, people were already betting on these fast footraces. In September 1790, two runners named Wood and Harper ran a mile in 4 minutes and 51 seconds.

Later that month, a huntsman ran it in 4 minutes and 39 seconds while barefoot.

Many famous athletes have pushed the limits of the mile. In the 1950s, everyone wanted to see a sub-four-minute mile. Roger Bannister was the first man to do this in May 1954.

In the 1940s, Swedish runners Gunder Hägg and Arne Andersson had a great rivalry. They each set three world records during that decade. Today, Hicham El Guerrouj from Morocco holds the men's world record. His time is 3:43.13. Faith Kipyegon from Kenya holds the women's record at 4:07.64.

The mile connects to many different types of running today. You can see it in high school and college meets. Some big annual races include the Wanamaker Mile and the Bowerman Mile. It is even run on roads, like the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York City. While many big games use the 1500 metres, the mile is still special. It is the only imperial distance with official world records. It continues to be a benchmark for runners everywhere.
