800 metres

sports Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The 800 metre race is a famous track running event. It is often called the shortest middle-distance race. Runners go around an outdoor track twice to finish. In the winter, they run four laps on an indoor track instead. This race has been part of the Olympic Games since the first modern games in 1896. It grew from a traditional British racing distance called a half mile. An 800 metre race is actually 4.67 metres shorter than a half mile.

To be a great runner, you need a special mix of skills. Athletes must have aerobic endurance to keep going for a long time. They also need anaerobic conditioning and sprint speed to finish fast. Because of this, they must train for both types of running. Many runners are fast enough to compete in the 400 metre sprint. Others have enough endurance to also run the 1500 metre race. Only Alberto Juantorena and Jarmila Kratochvílová have won major titles in both the 400m and 800m.

Racing in the 800m is very tactical. After the first bend, all the runners move into a single lane. This means their position in the pack is very important. Some runners try to stay near the front to avoid trips. Others use a different plan to win. They might run a negative split, which means the second lap is faster than the first. Some champions, like Dave Wottle and Kelly Holmes, stayed behind the pack and then sped up at the end.

Records in this race are very impressive. David Rudisha holds the men's world record. He ran his amazing time of 1:40.91 at the 2012 Olympics in London. He ran the first lap in 49.28 seconds and the second in 51.63 seconds. For women, Jarmila Kratochvílová holds the world record. She set her time of 1:53.28 in Munich in 1983. These athletes show how much speed and strength can work together.

Europe has seen great times from Wilson Kipketer and Jarmila Kratochvílová. North America and the Caribbean have athletes like Marco Arop and Ana Fidelia Quirot. Even in Oceania, runners like Peter Bol and Jessica Hull compete at high levels. These records show that people all over the world love this fast race.
