It involves running continuously over distances of at least 3,000 meters. People do this for many different reasons today. Some run for exercise or to improve their heart health. Others run as a competitive sport or for cultural traditions. Groups like the Hopi and Tarahumara people use running in ceremonies.

It is a way to connect with others through run clubs.

To run far, the body uses two different ways to make energy. Most of the time, runners use aerobic respiration. This happens when the body uses oxygen to power the muscles. Toward the end of a race, a runner might speed up. This can lead to anaerobic respiration because the body lacks enough oxygen.

Runners must also manage their fuel carefully. They use glycogen, which is stored in the muscles and liver. They also use fatty acids to help save their glycogen stores. This helps them keep going for a long time.

Humans have been long-distance runners for a very long time.

Some hunter-gatherer groups, like the San of the Kalahari, used running to hunt. They would run at a steady pace for many hours. This would eventually make an animal too tired to move. In ancient Sumer, people called lasimu acted as running messengers. In ancient Greece, messengers were known as hemerodromoi, or "day runners." A famous legend tells of Pheidippides running from Marathon to Athens. This story is why we have the marathon race today.

Our bodies are specially built to handle these long distances.

Unlike many other animals, humans walk and run upright. Our center of mass sits right above our legs. We also have long, springy tendons that help us move efficiently. Sweating is another huge advantage for us. It helps our bodies stay cool while we move. This is different from animals that must pant to cool down. These traits make humans some of the best distance runners.

Today, you can find long-distance running in many different places.
