Running has many roles in history. Long ago, some people ran to hunt. They ran at a steady pace. They waited for animals to get too tired to move. Other people ran to carry news. In ancient Greece, messengers were called hemerodromoi, or "day runners." One famous runner named Pheidippides ran to tell people about a victory. This story helped start the marathon race. Today, many people join run clubs. They run to meet friends and reach goals.
