Middle-distance running

sports Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Middle-distance running is a very special kind of race. It is longer than a quick sprint. It is shorter than a long run. Runners need two different skills. They need fast feet. They also need aerobic endurance. This means their bodies can work hard for a long time.

Many races are run on a track. The 800 meter race is a famous one. It is two laps around a standard track. The 1500 meter race is also very popular. It is often called the metric mile. This race is very tactical. This means runners must think carefully about how they move. Some races are won in the very last few meters!

Some races use different units. The mile is a common race in many countries. For a long time, people thought a sub-four-minute mile was impossible. Then, Roger Bannister did it in 1954.

There are also harder races like the 3000 meter steeplechase. In this race, runners must jump over barriers. They even jump over a water pit! This takes great strength and agility.
