200 metres

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The 200 metres is a fast sprint race.

It takes a lot of skill to run it well. Runners start in special blocks. They use a 'set' position in these blocks. This helps them push off with great power. They can start the race much faster this way.

Most 200 metre races happen on an outdoor track. The race begins on a curve. Then the runners move to a straight path. This mix of turns and straights is tricky. Runners must use speed endurance to finish strong. This means they must keep their speed up for a long time.

Many great athletes try to win two titles. They win the 100 metres and the 200 metres. This is called a 'double.' Usain Bolt is a famous man who did this. He won three times at the Olympic Games. For women, Elaine Thompson-Herah has done it twice. The men's world record is 19.19 seconds. Usain Bolt set this record in 2009. The women's world record is 21.34 seconds. Florence Griffith-Joyner set this in 1988.
