People have raced for a very long time. In ancient Greece, runners had the stadion race. This race went from one end of a stadium to the other. Some runners trained in heavy sand. This helped them learn to be light on their feet. In Hawaii, fast runners were called Kukini. They ate special foods like sweet potatoes and roasted fowl.

Today, sprinters use starting blocks to begin. These blocks help them build power in their muscles. They start in a low crouch. Then, they move into an upright position as they gain speed.

Most races use lanes so runners stay in one path. At the Summer Olympics, there are three main sprint races. These are the 100, 200, and 400 metre races. Some athletes also run in a relay. In a relay, a team passes a baton to each other.
