Triple jump

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The triple jump is an exciting track and field event.

It is a test of speed and skill. Athletes sprint down a long runway toward a takeoff mark. This mark can be a piece of wood or a painted rectangle. To avoid a foul, the jumper must not step over this line. If they do, a judge raises a red flag.

The jump has three parts called the hop, the step, and the jump. First, the athlete performs a hop. They must land on the same foot they used to take off. Next comes the step. This is a big bound where they land on the other foot. Finally, they perform a jump into a pit filled with sand.

This sport has a long history. It has been in the modern Olympics since 1896. Women began competing in the Olympics in 1996. Some stories say ancient Greeks performed long jumps too. In Irish mythology, a triple jump was part of the Tailteann Games. Today, athletes like Jonathan Edwards and Yulimar Rojas hold world records.
