Triple jump

sports Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The triple jump is an amazing track and field event.

It is one of the horizontal jumps. This means it focuses on moving far across the ground. It is very similar to the long jump. Athletes must use speed, balance, and great skill. They want to fly through the air with a steady rhythm. The goal is to land as far as possible in a sand pit.

An athlete starts by sprinting down a long runway. They run toward a takeoff mark. This mark might be a piece of wood or a painted rectangle. To keep the jump fair, they must not step over this line. If they do, it is called a foul or a scratch. A judge will then raise a red flag.

The jump has three parts in a continuous sequence. First is the hop where they land on the same foot. Next is the step where they land on the other foot. Finally, they perform a big jump into the sand.

This sport has roots that go back a very long time. Some say the ancient Olympic Games had long jumps. Historians think these might have been series of jumps. This idea may have started the triple jump. In Irish mythology, a triple jump was called the geal-ruith. It was part of the Tailteann Games in County Meath. These games happened as early as 1829 BC. The modern Olympics have included this event since 1896. The first modern Olympic champion, James Connolly, was a triple jumper.

Rules for the jump are very specific. In the hop, the athlete must land on the same foot they used to take off. In the step, they must land on the opposite foot. Then they perform the final jump. The women's triple jump joined the Olympics in 1996 in Atlanta. In men's competitions, the sand pit usually starts 13 meters from the board. For women, it often starts 11 meters away. Athletes usually have about 90 seconds to make their attempt. They must stay fast through every single phase.

Today, world-class athletes push the limits of human ability. Jonathan Edwards from Great Britain holds the men's outdoor world record. He set this mark in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1995. The female world record holder is Yulimar Rojas from Venezuela.

These athletes show us how much power a human can have. Watching them move is like watching a fast, rhythmic dance. They turn a simple run into a huge, soaring flight. It is a beautiful display of strength and grace.
