Javelin throw

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The javelin throw is a thrilling track and field event. Athletes try to throw a long spear as far as possible. This spear is called a javelin. It is about 2.5 meters long. To get power, throwers run down a long runway. This movement is called a run-up. It helps them build speed before the throw. The javelin is a key part of many competitions. It is used in the men's decathlon. It is also used in the women's heptathlon.

There are specific rules for how to throw. An athlete must hold the javelin by its grip. This grip is a cord part in the middle. The throw must be done overhand. The athlete throws it over their shoulder or upper arm. They cannot spin around like a discus thrower. They also cannot start with their back to the target. The javelin must land tip-first within a specific wedge-shaped area. This area is called a sector. If the tip does not land first, the throw does not count.

This sport has a very long history. It was part of the Ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC. In those old games, there were two types of events. One was for distance and one was for hitting a target. Long ago, athletes used a leather strap called an ankyle. This strap helped the javelin spin through the air. In the 1870s, people in Germany and Sweden began throwing poles again. This led to the modern javelin we see today. Sweden and Finland became very strong in this sport.

Many famous athletes have made their mark in this event. Eric Lemming from Sweden was a great champion. He won Olympic gold in 1906, 1908, and 1912. He also set the first official world record. In the 1930s, Mildred "Babe" Didrikson won the first women's Olympic gold. Javelins have changed from wood to metal over time. In 1986, the men's javelin was redesigned to land more safely. This change moved the center of gravity forward. Today, Jan Železný holds the men's world record at 98.48 meters. Barbora Špotáková holds the women's record at 72.28 meters.

To be a great thrower, you need special skills. You need strength in your core and upper body. You also need the speed of a sprinter. Athletes use weights and resistance bands to train. They also practice stretching and running. At the moment of release, a javelin can fly at 113 km/h. This requires a lot of agility and power. It is a mix of running, jumping, and throwing skills.
