Two teams of eleven players compete against each other. Each team has ten field players and one goalkeeper. Players use curved sticks to move a small, hard ball. They try to guide the ball into the rival team's shooting circle. The goal is to hit the ball into the net. The team with the most goals at the end wins the match.

Players use a stick that has two different sides. One side is rounded and the other side is flat. Only the flat face of the stick can be used to move the ball. If a player uses the rounded side, the other team gets a penalty. Goalkeepers have a special stick designed to cover more area. They can also use any part of their body to stop the ball. This is only allowed when they are inside the shooting circle.

The modern version of the sport was developed in England during the 19th century. The first known club was formed in 1849 at Blackheath in London. Later, the Teddington Hockey Club helped create the modern rules we use today. They introduced the striking circle and changed the ball shape. This helped turn the game into the sport we recognize now.
