Ice skating is the art of gliding across a flat ice surface. You move yourself using metal-bladed skates attached to your feet.

People enjoy skating for many different reasons today. Some do it for simple fun or for exercise. Others use it as a competitive sport or even to travel. You can find ice on natural ponds, lakes, and rivers.

You can also find it on man-made surfaces like ice rinks. These rinks are found in arenas or specialized hockey fields.

Skating works because of how ice behaves under a blade. There is a tiny layer of molecules on the surface. These molecules are not tightly bound like the ones deeper down. This creates a semiliquid layer that acts like a lubricant.

This layer is only about one molecule thick. As the temperature goes up, this slippery layer gets thicker. This allows the metal blade to glide smoothly over the surface. It is a very clever way to move across the ice.

Skating has a very long and interesting history. Scientists think the earliest skating happened in southern Finland. This was more than 4,000 years ago.

Back then, people used animal bones to glide. These bones helped them save energy during winter journeys. Later, the Dutch added steel edges to skates in the 1300s. These sharp edges allowed skaters to cut into the ice. This change made movement much easier and more controlled.

Many different sports have grown from these early steps. In England, people once used butcher's bones as skates.

In the Fens, workers raced for prizes like food or money. They used special skates called fen runners. These had beechwood parts and small spikes for stability.

Later, the first national skating body formed in Cambridge in 1879. This group held professional championship races for large crowds. Other sports like ice hockey and ringette also use the ice. They use different objects like pucks, balls, or rubber rings.

Figure skating is a special way to combine sport and art. An American named Jackson Haines changed how people skate.

He was the first to add ballet and dance moves. He also invented the sit spin for skaters. He even made a shorter, curved blade for easier turns. In 1892, the International Skating Union was started in the Netherlands. This group made the first official rules for competition. Now, skaters from all over the world follow these rules. They can perform beautiful moves in front of many people.
