It makes the rules for many different types of skating. These include figure skating, speed skating, and short track speed skating. They also look after synchronized skating, where groups move together. The ISU makes sure that every competition is fair for everyone.

This group helps skaters from all over the world compete against each other. Without the ISU, it would be hard to have big events like the Winter Olympics. They keep the sports organized and exciting for fans everywhere.

To keep things fair, the ISU follows a specific way of working. They create rules for how skaters should perform their moves. In the past, figure skaters had to do special shapes on the ice called compulsory figures.

Now, the rules focus more on technical points. Skaters earn points for different parts of their routines to show their skill. The ISU even uses video replay to check decisions made by judges. This helps make sure the winners are chosen correctly. They also manage many different championships every single year.

The ISU has a very long and interesting history.

It was started in July 1892 in Scheveningen, Netherlands. At the first meeting, only 15 men attended to talk about skating. They represented places like Great Britain, Germany, Austria, and Hungary. The ISU was the first group like this for winter sports. In 1895, they decided to focus only on amateur skaters. This meant they worked with people who skated for fun or sport, not for money. Their first amateur championship happened in Russia in 1896.

Many different countries have joined the ISU over the years.

There are now 80 member countries from all over the world. These members come from four main zones. The largest group is in Europe with 45 members. There are also 35 members in the Four Continents zone. This zone includes countries from Africa, Asia, Oceania, and the Americas. In 2019, new members joined from Chile, Peru, Turkmenistan, and Vietnam. The group has grown slowly since the two world wars ended after 1945.

You might recognize many of these skating events on TV. The ISU disciplines were part of the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924. They also help run the famous World Championships for different skating styles. If you see a skater performing a beautiful dance on ice, they might be following ISU rules. Even the way they are judged comes from the ISU system. The group has been based in Lausanne, Switzerland, since 1947. They use English as their official language to talk to everyone. It is a huge part of the world of winter sports.
